Why ChatGPT Doesn't Recommend Your Business (and How to Fix It)

When a solid business is missing from AI recommendations, the cause is almost always one of five concrete, fixable problems. Most of them are technical, cheap to correct, and take effect within weeks.

01

There is nothing about you worth quoting

ChatGPT and Gemini do not remember your company. When someone asks for a recommendation, the AI runs a web search in the background, reads what it finds and writes an answer from that. Gemini leans on Google's index, ChatGPT mostly on Bing's. If your site says "quality and customer focus" but never states what you do, where you operate and what it costs, there is nothing for the model to work with.

The fix is boring and effective: service pages that answer real questions, with concrete numbers.

02

Your prices and facts are locked inside images and PDFs

An answer to "what does X cost" is built from pages where the cost is written as text. A price list that lives in a picture or a downloadable PDF is an empty spot for the machine. Same for phone numbers in images and addresses in graphics.

03

Your robots.txt tells AI to go away

A surprising number of sites block GPTBot, ClaudeBot or Google-Extended without knowing it, usually because a plugin did it in the name of privacy. The result is voluntary invisibility. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look.

Allowing AI crawlers is a one-line change, and in 2026 being readable by ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity is a customer acquisition channel rather than a privacy risk.

04

Nobody else mentions you

AI trusts facts it can find in more than one place. Reviews on Google, entries in directories, mentions in media and on other sites give your name weight. A site that only praises itself does not convince a machine any more than it convinces a person. This is the slowest lever, but it compounds: every honest review and every mention raises the probability of being named.

05

Your facts are not machine-readable

Structured data (schema.org) tells the machine directly: this is a company, here is its name, location, services and prices. An llms.txt file does the same for AI assistants in plain text. Both take about an hour to add and most businesses have neither, which means having them still sets you apart.

We publish our own llms.txt and an MCP endpoint, and we have received enquiries that were researched and delivered by AI assistants. It works.

How to diagnose your own site

Measure blind. Do not ask the AI "tell me about company X", because you fed it the name yourself and it proves nothing. Ask for recommendations in your field and region without mentioning your name, repeat it several times, and count how often you appear.

The check scores the technical half of this list in about half a minute and shows which of the five problems you actually have.

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone guarantee my business a place in ChatGPT answers?

No. AI answers change with every question and models update constantly. What can honestly be done is to measure how often you are mentioned today, fix the things that raise the probability, and measure again. Anyone promising a guaranteed spot is selling air.

Is AI search optimization the same as SEO?

Partly. Good classic SEO is a prerequisite, because AI reads the same sources a search engine finds. But an AI answer is synthesized text, not a list of links. To get into it, your content has to answer the questions customers actually ask, and your facts have to be machine-readable.

How fast do results come?

Technical fixes such as prices as text, structured data, llms.txt and robots.txt take effect within weeks, because AI runs a fresh search for every answer. Growing mentions and reviews takes months.
